How to Clean Your Dishwasher the Eco-Friendly Way

At Refillary, we believe that maintaining your appliances sustainably is as important as using eco-friendly products. Your dishwasher is a crucial kitchen ally, but over time, it can accumulate food particles, grease, jar label goo (if you're like us!) and soap scum, affecting its efficiency and hygiene. Cleaning it regularly ensures it operates efficiently and lasts longer. Here’s how to clean the inside of your dishwasher, including the filter, using natural, eco-friendly methods.

Why Clean Your Dishwasher?

1. Efficiency: A clean dishwasher runs more effectively, using less energy and water.

2. Hygiene: Prevents unpleasant odors and potential bacteria buildup.

3. Longevity: Routine cleaning extends the life of your dishwasher by preventing clogs and mechanical issues.

How Often Should You Clean It?

For optimal performance, aim to give your dishwasher a thorough cleaning once a month. But let's be real... that's a lot. We try and at least aim for quarterly! Regular maintenance will prevent buildup and help you avoid more intensive cleaning sessions.

Eco-Friendly Cleaning Steps

Step 1: Gather Your Supplies

- White vinegar, for its natural degreasing and deodorizing properties. (We have it at the shop!!)

- Baking soda, to help scrub away residue and neutralize odors. (Also at the shop!)

- An old toothbrush or soft dish brush, for gentle scrubbing. (These too!)

- A cloth or rag, to wipe down surfaces.

Step 2: Empty the Dishwasher

Start by removing all dishes and trays from your dishwasher to access all areas, including the filter and spray arms.

Step 3: Clean the Filter

1. Locate the Filter: Refer to your manufacturer’s manual to find the filter (often at the bottom of the dishwasher).

2. Remove the Filter: Gently twist and lift it out.

3. Clean the Filter: Rinse the filter under warm water. Use a toothbrush to scrub away any stuck-on debris with a paste made from baking soda and water for tougher spots.

4. Rinse and Replace: Rinse thoroughly and reinsert it securely.

Step 4: Clean the Interior

1. Vinegar Rinse: Place a bowl filled with one cup (or less if you're using our 30% stuff!) of white vinegar on the top rack of your dishwasher. Run a hot water cycle to remove grease and odors.

2. Baking Soda Sprinkle: After the vinegar cycle, sprinkle a cup of baking soda across the bottom of the dishwasher and run a short hot water cycle. This will freshen and lightly scrub the interior.

Step 5: Clean the Spray Arms

Check the spray arms for clogs. Clear any blockages with a toothpick to ensure water flows freely.

Step 6: Wipe Down Seals and Exterior

- Use a damp microfiber cloth to clean the door seals and the exterior of your dishwasher. Baking soda can be used on persistent stains or smudges.

Bonus Tips

- Check the Drain: Ensure the drain is clear of debris to prevent clogs.

- Wipe After Each Use: Quickly wiping down the door and seals after each cycle can extend your dishwasher’s cleanliness and efficiency.

- Run Hot Water Before Starting: Let the tap run hot before starting the dishwasher to ensure a hot water fill. This is especially useful if you find your dishwasher struggles to dissolve your dishwasher detergent of choice.

Keeping your dishwasher clean doesn't require harsh chemicals. Simple, sustainable ingredients like vinegar and baking soda are effective and gentle on the environment. Routine maintenance not only keeps your machine running smoothly but also contributes to a more energy-efficient and eco-friendly home.
